Streetcar The play centers around Blanche DuBois, who has been fired from her teaching job, and arrives unheralded at the small cardinal-room apartment of her pregnant sister, Stella Kowalski. Stella, who lives with Stanley, her rough and absolute husband in a poor section of the French Quarter in New Orleans, welcomes her older sister. Although Blanche portrays the part of an grim young woman, in actuality she is nothing more than an aging grayish belle who has come to tell her sister that she has lost everything, including their childhood home, Belle Reve.
